Alphanumeric CNPJ: What Companies Need to Know About the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service's New Implementation

  • July 22, 2026

The Brazilian Federal Revenue Service (Receita Federal) has brought forward part of the implementation schedule for the Alphanumeric CNPJ,the new identification format for legal entities in Brazil. The transition includes a period during which corporate registration systems will be temporarily unavailable and represents an important update for companies carrying out corporate, registration or tax-related procedures, as well as those using systems integrated with the CNPJ database.

Understanding this transition and preparing in advance is essential to minimize operational impacts and ensure business continuity.

What is the Alphanumeric CNPJ?

The Alphanumeric CNPJ is a structural update to the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service's legal entity registration system. The new format incorporates letters into the company identification number, expanding the system's capacity and modernizing Brazil's corporate registration framework.

The change goes beyond the CNPJ number itself. It also affects systems and platforms integrated with the Federal Revenue Service's database, requiring attention from companies that rely on automated solutions for corporate, tax, accounting and financial management.

Implementation schedule and operational impacts

The Brazilian Federal Revenue Service has established the following implementation timeline:

• July 23, 2026, 9:00 p.m. to July 25, 2026, 7:00 a.m.: systems available for consultation only;

• July 25, 2026, 7:00 a.m. to July 27, 2026, 7:00 a.m.: corporate registration services unavailable for processing;

• July 27, 2026, 7:00 a.m.: systems resume normal operation;

• July 31, 2026: issuance of the first Alphanumeric CNPJ.

During this period, procedures such as company incorporations, corporate and registration amendments, company closures, registrations and other filings with the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service may be affected. Whenever possible, companies are encouraged to initiate these procedures before the system downtime to avoid delays.

Attention to integrated systems

The impact of this change does not end when the Federal Revenue Service's systems resume operation.

Companies using ERP systems, accounting software, tax platforms or other solutions integrated with the CNPJ database should ensure that their systems are prepared to process the new alphanumeric format. Proper adaptation is essential to avoid operational inconsistencies and ensure business continuity.

Compliance as part of the strategy

Keeping up with regulatory changes is part of Mourão Campos Group's commitment to supporting domestic and international companies operating in Brazil.

This commitment to compliance is also recognized by the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service through the Receita Sintonia A+ Seal,the highest classification awarded under the Receita Sintonia Program to companies that demonstrate a high level of tax and corporate compliance.

In an ever-evolving regulatory environment, staying ahead of regulatory changes helps reduce operational risks, avoid disruptions to business activities and provide greater predictability for companies operating in Brazil.
